The Gorilla Capital Success Story

The two founders of Gorilla Capital started the business on a kitchen table and operated the business out of a pick up truck for the first 6 months before moving into office space in June 2006 and hiring two part-time employees.  Those first two employees are both still with the company, one as Human Resources Manager and the other as Vice President of Operations.

Founded in Oregon in 2006 at the height of the housing boom, Gorilla Capital began with the simple motto of “we sell them cheap, because we buy them cheaper.” The Gorilla model of carefully tracking reviewing and assessing thousands of foreclosure homes and buying only the highest quality properties quickly caught fire and the company branched out into 20 Oregon counties and to Idaho, Washington, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Florida, and California. The company’s rapid growth has earned it a spot on Inc. Magazine’s Top 500|5000 list of fastest growing companies each of the last two years, including being ranked as the 10th fastest growing real estate company in America.

When Gorilla Capital enters a new market, it’s goal is to become the dominant participant in that market within one year.  Gorilla Capital is the largest purchaser (either buying a majority of the homes or a plurality of the homes) in every market it has been in for a year or more.

In 2011, Oregon Business magazine ranked the company 127th on the Private 150 – the list of the largest privately held companies in Oregon, and The Portland Business Journal named Gorilla the state’s third fastest growing company, ranking it fourth in job growth.  Recently, Oregon Business magazine recognized Gorilla Capital as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in Oregon.

On March 19, 2012, Gorilla Capital celebrated the purchase of its 1,000th property with the purchase of a 1,249 square-foot condo in Hillsboro, later that same day, Gorilla made its 1,001st purchase (a home in Utah) and its 1,002nd purchase (a home in Arizona).

The Gorilla Process

The Gorilla process starts by looking at every home that enters the foreclosure process; Gorilla inspects, values, and researches title of each house before deciding whether to bid on the home. Gorilla then attends each foreclosure auction ready with cash to bid. By compiling an extensive database, carefully examining thousands of title records, and crunching the numbers on each house, Gorilla Capital is able to acquire the best homes for our customers.

Once we’ve found and purchased a home, we clean up the property and in many instances make significant repairs to the property. Even after all of the improvements and upgrades, we are usually able to price the home at least $20,000 below similar houses.

For busy homebuyers and investors, our e-mail alerts are the best way to stay informed. You don’t have to look for the information – we’ll deliver it to you. Once we acquire a house at auction, take photos, price the home, and post the home on our website, we send an e-mail out to alert our subscribers. A few days after the Email Alert has been sent out, we begin upgrading and improving the house and the price is subject to change as the improvements are completed.
